What is a fat transfer?

Fat transfer in Grand Rapids, MI is designed to augment the face and body using your own excess fat. As our faces age, they naturally lose volume. By restoring this lost volume, a fat transfer can create a more youthful appearance. In addition, fat transfer is a highly-effective body contouring solution. It increases volume and improves the shape of a variety of features – including the buttocks – to sculpt a more balanced figure.

Your fat transfer can be performed in a single office visit or in conjunction with a facelift or body contouring procedures. When done correctly, the fat transfer can:

  • Replace fat that has naturally diminished with age
  • Enhance the soft tissues of the buttocks
  • Naturally augment the lips, cheeks, and chin
  • Soften deep hollows beneath the eyes
  • Fill in deep facial creases
  • Improve the appearance of skeletal-looking hands, breasts, or body

The procedure

What to expect

Fat transfer is an outpatient procedure which is typically performed under local anesthesia. If the procedure is done in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation surgeries, such as a facelift or body contouring, general anesthesia will be used. The entire experience takes about one hour to complete, depending on the number of treatment areas.

Replacing fat requires that it first be removed with liposuction techniques from a site where it is abundant, such as the abdomen, hips or buttocks. Within the same treatment session that it is extracted, the fat is injected or grafted to improve facial contours, smooth away creases and depressions, enhance flat cheeks, add volume to the lips, reshape the buttocks, and occasionally add volume to the breasts or extremities.
